New York State granted one year extension to require new drivers licenses

New York State automobile drivers who have not yet upgraded to the enhanced drivers license, which cost $30 more than getting a standard drivers license, have been granted another year to upgrade their license if they want to get on an airplane (at least for now).  

The Department of Homeland Security let New Yorkers go another year without an enhanced drivers license if they want to board an airplane.  For now, New Yorkers can still use their regular old drivers license if they want to travel by plane domestically.  Of course, you'll still need a passport if you want to leave the country, but for people who like to stay within states when flying, you won't need to shell out an extra $30 to get an enhanced license.  

The extension goes into 2016 and without it approximately 10 million New Yorkers would not be able to board a domestic airline flight without the enhanced license.

Will the extension go beyond 2016?  No one can know for sure, but with most states now falling in line with the Real ID Act of 2005, it's probably a good idea to shell out the extra $30 if your drivers license if up for renewal.
